How to Set Up a Proxy on Android (Pixel, Samsung and Others)

To set a proxy on Android, open Settings → Network & internet → Internet, tap the gear next to your Wi-Fi network, tap the pencil or Edit, open Advanced options, set Proxy to Manual, enter the hostname and port, and save. On Samsung phones the path is Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi → gear → View more → Proxy → Manual. Android's proxy settings have no username or password fields, so the most reliable setup is to whitelist your network's IP with the proxy provider.

Pixel and stock Android

  1. 1Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet.
  2. 2Tap the gear next to your connected Wi-Fi network.
  3. 3Tap the pencil (Edit) icon at the top.
  4. 4Expand Advanced options.
  5. 5Set Proxy to Manual.
  6. 6Enter the Proxy hostname and Proxy port, and optionally hosts to bypass.
  7. 7Tap Save.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. 1Open Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Tap the gear next to your connected network.
  3. 3Tap View more.
  4. 4Tap Proxy and choose Manual.
  5. 5Enter the Proxy host name and Proxy port, then tap Save.

Authentication without a password field

Android's Wi-Fi proxy only stores a host and a port. Some browsers show a sign-in prompt when the proxy asks for credentials, but many apps simply fail. The dependable fix is IP whitelisting: register the public IP of the Wi-Fi network in your proxy dashboard, and the proxy accepts the phone without credentials.

Whitelist the network, not the phone. On home Wi-Fi the IP the proxy sees is your router's public address. Open our IP checker on the phone with the proxy off to find it.

Mobile data and SOCKS5

  • Mobile data: the Wi-Fi proxy does not apply. Some carriers let you set a proxy in the APN under Mobile network → Access Point Names, but many ignore it. A proxy client app that creates a local VPN is the practical route.
  • SOCKS5: not supported by the system setting. The same proxy client apps handle SOCKS5 with authentication.

Check and remove it

With the proxy on, open our IP checker in Chrome; it should show the proxy's IP. To remove it, edit the Wi-Fi network again and set Proxy to None. If pages fail to load, check the port and whether your network's IP is still on the whitelist — a router restart can change it.
