What Is a Residential Proxy? A Complete Guide

A residential proxy is an intermediary server that routes your internet traffic through an IP address assigned by an internet service provider (ISP) to a real home device. Because the request appears to come from a genuine residential user, websites are far less likely to block it — which is why residential proxies are the most reliable type for web scraping, data collection and automation.

If you have landed here after a scraper started returning CAPTCHAs, or after a set of accounts began asking for extra verification, the short version is this: the site is probably not objecting to what you did, but to where the request came from. A residential proxy changes that answer.

How residential proxies work

When you send a request through a residential proxy, the proxy forwards it to the target website using a real residential IP, receives the response, and passes it back to you. The website sees the residential IP and location instead of your own, so your activity blends in with normal home-user traffic.

The important word in that sequence is *gateway*. You never connect to a specific home device directly; you connect to one endpoint and the provider decides which exit your traffic leaves from. That is why this design is sometimes called a backconnect proxy, and it is what makes rotation possible without any change on your side.

Why the traffic looks trustworthy

It is not the IP address in isolation. Consumer ISP ranges sit under different ASNs than hosting providers, and those ASNs carry the reputation of millions of ordinary customers. Blocking one costs the site real users. Blocking a cloud range costs it almost nothing. That asymmetry is the entire advantage, and it is why a residential IP typically scores near zero on a fraud score check while a datacenter IP does not.

A residential proxy does not hide that you are automated. It makes blocking you expensive enough that the site would rather let you through.

Rotating vs sticky residential proxies

Rotating residential proxies assign a new IP on every request, which is ideal for large-scale scraping. Sticky sessions keep the same IP for a set duration — up to 72 hours at seamless, with around 45 minutes being the practical sweet spot — which is what you need whenever a site expects a consistent identity across several steps.

Rotation hands you a different exit each time. Continuity is the thing you have to ask for deliberately.

The failure mode people hit first is rotating when they needed stickiness. It produces a confusing symptom — the scraper works for one page and then loses its session — and it is worth ruling out before you start blaming the target. There is a full breakdown in rotating vs sticky sessions.

What residential proxies cost

Residential traffic is billed by bandwidth rather than by IP. When a residential proxy is the wrong choice

Three cases come up repeatedly, and in all three something else is cheaper or more reliable.

  1. 1The target does not block anything. Plenty do not. A datacenter proxy will do the same job for a fraction of the cost.
  2. 2You need one identity for months. Sticky sessions top out at 72 hours. An ISP proxy is static and stays yours.
  3. 3Latency decides the outcome. Residential routing adds roughly 250 ms. On a timed drop that is the whole margin.

Where the IPs come from

This is the question worth asking any provider, because the answer determines both the ethics and the reliability of what you are buying. Residential IPs reach a pool because a device owner opted in — typically through an SDK bundled with a free app or a paid bandwidth-sharing programme — and consented to their spare bandwidth being used. Pools assembled any other way, through malware or undisclosed bundling, are both a legal problem for you and an operational one: those exits go offline unpredictably and carry poor reputation.

Ask a provider two things before buying: how devices join the pool, and whether an exit can be shared with another customer at the same moment. Vague answers to either are the answer.

Using residential proxies is legal in most jurisdictions, and proxies are a standard networking tool used by security researchers, ad-verification firms and price-comparison sites. What matters is how they are sourced and what you do with them. You remain responsible for the terms of service of the sites you access and for local law — data protection rules in particular apply to what you collect, regardless of how you route the request.
