Static vs Rotating Proxies: Which One Your Job Actually Needs

A static proxy gives you the same IP address every time you connect, for as long as you rent it. A rotating proxy gives you a different IP per request or per session, drawn from a large pool. Use static proxies when something needs to recognise you over time — a logged-in account, an allowlist, a long session. Use rotating proxies when you need to look like many unrelated visitors — scraping, price checks, SERP collection. Most operations end up using both, for different jobs.

How each one works

A static proxy is an address assigned to you. At seamless that is an ISP proxy or a datacenter proxy: you connect to that IP, and every request leaves from it until the rental ends. A rotating proxy is a gateway in front of a pool. You always connect to the same hostname, and the gateway picks an exit — a new one per request, or the same one for a sticky session if you ask for it in the username.

When static wins

  • Logged-in accounts. A platform expects an account to come from roughly the same place. An IP that changes city every login is a risk signal. See managing multiple accounts.
  • Allowlisted access. Partner APIs, admin panels and B2B portals that only accept known addresses.
  • Anti-detect browser profiles. One profile, one static IP, permanently — the setup in best anti-detect browsers.
  • Long-running sessions where a mid-session IP change breaks the workflow.

When rotating wins

  • Scraping at volume. Rate limits are per IP; a pool spreads the load. See best proxies for web scraping.
  • Price and SERP monitoring across many locations.
  • Ad verification and geo checks that need many vantage points.
  • Anything where one blocked IP should not stop the job.

The common mistake is using a rotating pool for accounts because it is ‘more anonymous’. For an account, anonymity is the wrong goal — consistency is. A new IP per request looks less like a person, not more.

The middle ground: sticky sessions

A sticky session holds one exit from the rotating pool for a set time — up to 30 minutes on the Lite plan, with a custom TTL on Omni. It is the right tool for multi-step flows that are not tied to a long-lived account: a checkout test, a search-then-paginate crawl, an AI agent task. The details are in rotating vs sticky sessions.

Both models, one account

Static ISP proxies from €1.80/IP with unmetered bandwidth, rotating residential from €1.20/GB with sticky sessions. Mix them per job.

What each costs for the same job

JobStatic (ISP)Rotating (residential)
10 long-lived accounts10 × €2.07 ≈ €21/monthPoor fit — IP changes break trust
50 GB of scraping per monthFew IPs, fast bans on strict sites50 × €1.20 = €60
Monitoring 20 countries daily20+ IPs, one per countryA few GB with country targeting

Static proxies are cheap when you need few identities and heavy traffic through each. Rotating proxies are cheap when you need many identities and modest traffic through each. The how many proxies do I need guide turns that into numbers for your case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between static and rotating proxies?

A static proxy keeps the same IP address for the whole rental period. A rotating proxy assigns a different IP per request or per session from a large pool.

Are static proxies better than rotating proxies?

Neither is better in general. Static proxies suit logged-in accounts, allowlists and long sessions. Rotating proxies suit scraping, monitoring and any stateless collection at volume.

What is a static residential proxy?

It is a proxy with a fixed IP that is registered to a consumer internet provider, usually hosted in a data centre. It is also called an ISP proxy and combines datacenter speed with residential trust.

Can a rotating proxy keep the same IP?

Yes, with a sticky session. You add a session identifier to the proxy username and the gateway keeps the same exit for a set time, such as up to 30 minutes.

Should I use static or rotating proxies for social media accounts?

Static. Each account should log in from one consistent address. Rotating IPs make an account appear to move constantly, which platforms treat as a risk signal.
